When to use PNG and when to use JPG

The choice changes the file size and the visual result, and the rule of thumb is short:

  • Use PNG for logos, icons, screenshots, artwork with text or thin lines, and any image with a transparent background. PNG is lossless, so nothing gets blurry.
  • Use JPG for photographs and images that need to be light, such as email attachments or a website's image library. In photos, the visual difference is minimal and the file is usually much smaller.

Most searched conversions

  • Convert WEBP to JPG or PNG. WEBP is the format most websites use today, and several older programs still cannot open it.
  • Convert HEIC to JPG. This is the default format for iPhone photos. On Windows PCs and in many upload systems, HEIC does not open.
  • Convert AVIF to JPG or PNG. A new and very efficient format, with support that is still patchy outside the browser.
  • Convert BMP and TIFF to JPG. Heavy scanning and digitization formats that shrink considerably when turned into JPG.
  • Convert GIF to PNG. Uses the first frame of the animation and preserves transparency.
  • Convert PNG to JPG. The classic way to reduce the weight of a screenshot or exported artwork.

Frequently asked questions

Is the image converter free?

Yes. The tool is free, requires no sign-up and does not add a watermark to the image. It is offered as a courtesy by Pushfy, a communication platform for businesses.

Which image formats are accepted?

JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, ICO, JP2 and PSD. The output can be PNG or JPG. Vector files such as SVG are not accepted, because they require a different kind of processing.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background, text, thin lines or is a screenshot, because PNG does not lose sharpness. Choose JPG for photographs and when file size matters more than detail: in photos, JPG is usually much smaller with minimal visual difference.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

The JPG format has no transparency channel. To avoid turning the transparent area black, which is the default result in most programs, the tool composites the image over a white background before saving. If you need to keep transparency, choose PNG.

Are the image quality and orientation preserved?

Yes. The original resolution and aspect ratio are kept, with no resizing. The orientation recorded by the camera is applied to the pixels, so a photo taken with the phone held vertically does not come out sideways. The color profile is preserved when there is one, so the image does not look washed out. Other metadata, such as location and camera model, is removed: this reduces the file size and is better for your privacy.

What is the image size limit?

Up to 40 MB per file and up to 50 megapixels of resolution, equivalent to an image of about 8600 by 5800 pixels. That comfortably covers photos from phones and professional cameras.
